Gravediggers Cindy M Hogan 9780985131845 Books Reviews
Received in exchange for a honest review.
I enjoyed this book. We get to see what can happen when something builds up and you allow anger to cloud your judgement. Billy was misled from the truth by so many that he got frustrated in the end. It wasn't until he saw the impact of things on one person that he was able to finally let go of all the anger and frustration.
The writing was powerful in how it kept you swayed and wondering what would be uncovered next as Billy tried to find closure by finding out who harmed his dad. When he finds the truth about things his life changes. He keeps running to roadblocks and deception along the way that frustrates him and makes him feel that he had no one to trust.
His friend Henry and Henry's cousin Amanda were there trying to help him figure things out but sometimes Billy felt alone. When people would open up to them and not him because they were asked not to really hurt Billy. The actions of adults he trusted and loved that made him feel hurt and betrayed really messed with Billy's mind. He didn't know where to turn. He had a crush on Amanda but she turned him down at first which hurt him and helped to spurn on his anger and frustration. Henry got mad at him and that didn't help Billy either. He felt like an island and didn't know where to turn or who to trust.
What started out as finding out the truth behind his dad's death turned into finding so many secrets and lies. So many mysteries to look at and solve and they all lead to one thing GREED and FEAR. For the old pastor guilt and sadness was seen. It wasn't until Billy truly saw the man and what he suffered all those years that he was able to let go of his anger and be able to forgive everything around him. Forgive his mom for lying to protect him out of fear he would become angry and bitter, forgive the police chief for his lies and accept him into his world again openly and lovingly, forgive the mayor for his deception and cover ups and forgive the ones responsible for him losing his dad. He forgave Amanda for being afraid and they were able to go on and become more. He was able to find peace again.
A great twisting mystery that leads to revealing many secrets and deception but also shows us what can happen when we allow anger to take over.
Gravediggers by Cindy Hogan is so different from the other book I read by her, this one is more of a mystery with a touch of romance an I enjoyed it a lot.
This book is a YA one that will appeal to both male and female readers, and even people of all ages. I really loved the way that the story flowed after setting the scene and that it was told from the main character, Billy Howard's point of view, he changed quite a bit during the book, not always for the best!
Welcome to Halls, Tennessee.
Meet Billy Howard a young male obsessed by the hit and run death of his father 10 years ago, now at the age of 17 he is both studious and hardworking... he and his mother remember his father and this causes Billy to be a man possessed! Billy Howard wants to be in the FBI(so he can solve the answer to his father's death) when he finishes college and to save up for that he works as a part-time gravedigger along with his best friend Henry. While Billy & Henry are digging a new grave under a tree, Billy hits something thinking it is a rock he digs it up and sees an old Army duffle with what looks like an ammo box in it.. then the Pastor comes running up and says that he has told them the wrong place to dig, so they fill in the diggings. The Pastor shows them where to dig the grave but it is too late to do so that day, but it has to be done before 9a.m. for the funeral. Later that night Billy unable to sleep thinking about the box, he goes back to the reburied grave, but when he gets there the box has gone!! Dejected he goes home but returns at dawn to dig the other grave, and when he goes into the church the ammo-box is behind the pulpit.. it's open and inside are jewels, $5000, 2keys and a brittle old newspaper with an article about the Pastor's wife who died mysteriously 9 years ago.. is this connected to his father's death? what happened to the Pastor's wife?
This summer read what happens when Billy, Henry's cousin Amanda, who's spending the summer, will these young people be able to solve the mysteries behind both deaths? Just when you believe you have the answer the plot it twists and turns putting red herrings in your path. AS their investigative skills improve Billy begins to get progressively unable to discern who to believe and trust! He is also becoming very irritable and anger prevails.. will they ever discover his father's killer? is the Pastor's wife's death connected? and will Billy be able to forgive the people who did these things? or will revenge get the better of him?
Gravediggers is a great read, along the same investigative lines of the Hardy boys with Nancy Drew, with Billy, Henry and Amanda spending a fraught summer the mystery will keep you guessing until the end!
Cindy Hogan has created a world filled with danger at every twist and turn keeping the reader turning to the next page as they have to find out what happens and it keeps it's mystery until the end. The ending will surprise many!
Gravediggers is a very emotional story that includes lots of remembrances of Billy and his mum father/husband these were really moving and I cried! We have Billy's mind going around and around and feel his frustrations when he hits a dead end. but the ending is well worth the read which is fast paced and interesting, holds your attention well throughout the whole book. Gravediggers is well written it was intelligent with likeable characters, who make you want to find out what happens next. I had to keep reading because of the mystery of the two deaths which I thought I knew what happened but you have to keep reading the book to the end to get it!
A really interesting read that pulls you into it but at a slower pace than the other book I read, Adrenaline Rush, but equally as good! It is a mystery with a dash of suspense and a touch of romance.
I thought it was a great read aimed at the young adults, probably males but females will enjoy the book too! Myself being older, think that this book could be read in older audiences too, it will remind them of older mystery books!
I give it 4 stars a very well written mystery with a touch of romance.
I received this copy from the author for an honest review
I have not yet finished the entire book, but it does keep me wanting to read more. I like the a story that has morals ingrained in the characters.
Good but not as good as her first series.
While I understand this is a mystery written for the young adult, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was as well written as her other books and even more enjoyable.
Such an emotional story. Very different to read it from a guys point of view vs a girls. Quite refreshing to see new materials from Cindy!
A great read into the teenage mind and heart. Growing up is hard work, but the rewards are worth it. Cindy Hogan knows how to explore this process through the situations of her characters. Good job.
